IHG Cancellation Policy 2026: What Your Rate Actually Says

The IHG cancellation policy is not a single deadline. IHG publishes no chain-wide cut-off, and says as much on its own site: policies vary by hotel and by rate type.

That sounds like a dodge until you see what it means in practice. The rate line on your own booking is the governing document, and it is the only thing that can tell you your deadline.

Two reservations at the same property, made the same morning, can carry different cancellation terms. The rate decides, not the brand on the building.

What is the IHG cancellation policy?

IHG's answer is that there is not one number. It describes most reservations as flexible, then hands the specifics to the property.

IHG's guidance on award stays says the same thing. Individual hotels "may have unique cancellation policies," so "you should always check your individual rate details."

So the useful question is not what IHG's deadline is. It is what your rate's deadline is, and where to read it.

For the view across chains, our guide to hotel cancellation policies by chain lines IHG up against Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt and the rest.

Why the IHG cancellation deadline changes from hotel to hotel

IHG is a franchising business more than a hotel operator, and the portfolio is wide. It counts "21 hotel brands" across "7,000+ global destinations."

21 brands

A Candlewood Suites extended stay and a Regent resort were never going to share one cancellation rule.

IHG's member terms list the brands in IHG One Rewards, alongside its brand directory.

  • Atwell Suites, avid hotels, Candlewood Suites, Crowne Plaza, EVEN Hotels, Garner
  • Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Holiday Inn Resort, Holiday Inn Club Vacations, Hotel Indigo, HUALUXE Hotels & Resorts
  • Participating Iberostar Beachfront Resorts, InterContinental, Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants, Regent Hotels & Resorts
  • Participating Ruby Hotels, Participating Six Senses Hotels Resorts Spas, Staybridge Suites, Vignette Collection, voco hotels

IHG flexible rates and Advance Purchase rates

Every IHG rate falls on one side of a line. Either it can be cancelled up to a deadline, or it was paid for in full and cannot.

IHG's own rate-plan names include "Advance Saver rates" and "Best Flexible rates." The prepaid family is branded Book Early and Save, also written as Advance Purchase.

Rate familyWhat IHG publishesCan you cancel it?What comes back
Flexible rates, including Best FlexibleTerms that "may vary by hotel and rate type"Yes, up to the deadline the property setsYour money, if you cancel before that deadline
Book Early and Save / Advance PurchaseReservations are "final and require full prepayment for the entire stay at time of booking"No. IHG states "no refunds if cancelled or changed"Nothing. IHG describes the payment as non-refundable
Reward Nights, booked with pointsCancellable against "the cancellation time set by the hotel"Yes, on ihg.com, in the app, or through Customer CarePoints redeposited, with a possible no-show charge set by the hotel
Points and Cash"The cost for the Points purchased is non-refundable"Yes, under the Reward Nights termsThe purchased points, but not the cash you paid for them

The lower prepaid rate is not free. It is the price of giving up the deadline.

If your dates are firm, that trade can be worth taking. If they are not, a flexible rate is buying you an option, and the option has a price.

The deadline is also what makes a lower rate worth acting on later, which we cover in cancelling and rebooking a hotel at a lower rate.

What happens if you cancel an IHG booking late or no-show?

IHG documents a no-show charge, and it does not set the amount. The hotel does.

Its member terms describe the charge on a Reward Night as "based on the applicable hotel policy, plus tax, per room, billed to the credit card used to guarantee the reservation upon booking."

Notice what that wording does not contain. No one-night convention is published at the chain level, so the number comes from the property.

Set by the hotel

There is a second cost that is easy to miss. IHG states that "points and/or Qualifying Night credit are not awarded for no-shows or rooms that are cancelled after the hotel cancellation time even if the room is paid for in full."

A late cancellation on a paid stay can therefore cost you the room charge and the elite-night credit at once.

Can you cancel an IHG Reward Night and get your points back?

Yes, and IHG's wording here is more forgiving than most. The points come back even when you miss the deadline.

Cancel in time and the rule is plain. Members who cancel "prior to the cancellation time set by the hotel will have the Points redeemed for that reservation re-deposited into their IHG One Rewards account."

Cancel late and the points still return. IHG states that after the hotel's window "the points will be redeposited," with day-of-arrival cancellations "subject to review" and the refund possibly delayed.

So the penalty on a late award cancellation is a cash charge rather than a lost redemption. IHG also notes that most Reward Nights "allow you to cancel a day before your check-in date."

A Points and Cash booking splits in two when you cancel. The points you bought are redeposited, and IHG states that "the cost for the Points purchased is non-refundable."

Points stays sit outside what Autopilot does, and so do prepaid rates, because a rate with no deadline has nothing to reprice into. On a flexible IHG rate booked directly, once you add your stay, Autopilot tracks the rate and reprices the reservation when it drops, from booking to check-in.

Where to find your IHG cancellation deadline

IHG points at four places, and a chain-wide policy page is not one of them.

  1. Read the rate details before you book

IHG's instruction is to "review the cancellation terms at the time of booking." On a prepaid rate you are asked to acknowledge those terms, so the text is in front of you when you commit.
  2. Open Manage Your Reservations

IHG says you can change or cancel a reservation "for any IHG property" through Manage Your Reservations, where your booking's terms also live.
  3. Use the IHG One Rewards app for award stays

Reward Nights cancel on the website, in the app, or through Customer Care. IHG says guests get a notification to call if online cancellation is unavailable.
  4. Ask the property

IHG's own line is to "contact the hotel directly for assistance." The property sets both the deadline and the no-show amount, so it can confirm them.

One gap worth closing yourself: IHG does not state centrally which time zone the deadline runs in. If your cancellation will be close, confirm it with the property.

If your question is about the rate rather than the date, our piece on whether hotel prices fall closer to the date covers what actually moves.

What IHG does not publish about cancellations

Being precise about the gaps is part of reading the IHG cancellation policy correctly. Four things are not stated on IHG's customer care pages, as of September 2026.

  • A chain-wide free-cancellation deadline. No 24-hour, 48-hour or evening cut-off appears as an IHG-wide rule. Your rate details carry the number.
  • A one-night convention for late cancellation on cash rates. IHG documents the no-show charge for Reward Nights and sets the amount by hotel policy. No cash-rate equivalent is published.
  • A Reward Night redeposit fee. No such fee appears in the member terms or the award FAQ. IHG also never states outright that none exists, so treat it as unstated rather than settled.
  • Cancellation terms brand by brand. Only Six Senses gets a named carve-out. The absence of one elsewhere is not a promise that a brand has none.

Where a number is not published, the honest answer is to read your own booking.

The IHG cancellation policy is unlikely to consolidate soon, because franchising is what puts the deadline in each property's hands. The habit that pays is checking the rate name first rather than last.
