Do Hotel Prices Go Down Closer to the Date? How to Rebook
Do hotel prices go down closer to the date? Sometimes, and no public dataset can say what your hotel will do on your night, which is why a hotel price drop after booking is something to check for rather than predict.
Here is the part that surprises people. No major chain's best rate guarantee covers your own rate falling, because every one of them requires a lower price on somebody else's website within 24 hours of booking.
What protects you is the cancellation deadline printed in your rate details. The guarantee you assume covers a falling rate does not, and the deadline does.
Do hotel prices go down closer to the date?
Two datasets get conflated here, and the strong one is about booking behaviour, not price. Lighthouse, publishing on March 23, 2026, found that searches made within 28 days of the stated arrival date rose 9% to 38% of all searches.
32% to 46%
Lighthouse publishes no data on whether hotel prices go down closer to the date. That finding is about when travellers book, and it is routinely reported as though it proved prices drop (mylighthouse.com).
When do hotel prices go down? The late-booking evidence, and its limits
KAYAK, publishing on April 24, 2026, says you can "save up to 26% on domestic hotels and up to 27% on international hotels compared to the average price if you book a month prior" (kayak.com).
Print the methodology beside the number. That is search data from January 1, 2025 to March 18, 2026 rather than transactions, "up to" is carrying weight, and KAYAK sells price alerts.
A mechanism points the other way too. If a growing share of demand now arrives inside 28 days, revenue managers have less reason to discount late, not more.
Do hotel prices fluctuate enough to be worth watching?
Ask how often hotel prices drop closer to the date and the published figures span roughly 20% to 57%, from companies that sell price monitoring. Treat that as a range, not a number.
The defensible version is narrower. Whether hotel prices drop closer to the date depends on the night: rates drift down on soft ones and firm up on tight ones, and averages across millions of searches are dominated by the former.
On a refundable rate, checking costs nothing. The real question is never whether the rate will drop, it is whether you are still inside the cancellation window when it does.
Why a hotel best rate guarantee misses a hotel price drop after booking
A best rate guarantee is a competitive pricing tool, not price-drop protection. It pays out when you find a lower rate for the same stay on another company's website, inside 24 hours of booking.

What a hotel price match requires, in each chain's own words
As of August 2026, the wording is consistent across six chains.
- Marriott lists as non-qualifying "Marriott channel rates found during later searches on Marriott channels" (marriott.com).
- Hilton requires the lower price be "Not on an official Hilton channel", and its FAQ adds that "Online travel agents are not considered direct booking channels" (hilton.com).
- IHG asks for a lower rate "on an eligible, non-IHG website within 24 hours of making your reservation" (ihg.com).
- Wyndham needs a Public Internet Rate: viewable and bookable on another website for the same hotel, room type, guests and dates.
- Choice needs a Third-Party Website, and states that metasearch sites such as Google, Bing, Kayak, Trivago and TripAdvisor do not count.
- Hyatt matches a lower, publicly available, immediately bookable room-only rate "on another site".
The pattern is the story. Every one of these is a 24-hour-from-booking window against a third-party price, so none is a tool for a rate that falls in week three.
That makes this topic two separate problems. Our post on hotel price match policies covers matching someone else's price; this one covers your own rate falling.
What changed in the last month
Three load-bearing facts on this topic moved inside 30 days, each dated on the company's own page.
- Expedia ended the Hotel Price Guarantee on July 28, 2026. Its claim page reads: "Hotel Price Guarantee will end on July 28, 2026 as part of updates to One Key. Eligible bookings made before this date will still qualify" (expedia.com). It was the only product here covering a drop in the seller's own price.
- Hilton rewrote its Price Match Guarantee terms effective August 20, 2026. You can no longer claim before you book, phone claims are gone, and the terms state that screenshots cannot be used to approve a claim.
- IHG updated its Best Price Guarantee terms on August 14, 2026 and now defers the points award: "No points compensation or advance award of points will be provided prior to stay completion."
Two dated facts sit alongside each other here. Expedia's claim page carries the July 28, 2026 end date, and the Hotels.com page still describes the programme for members who joined One Key before October 31, 2025.
Confirm the current terms with the seller before you rely on either. Marriott's guarantee, separately, is no longer called Look No Further on its live page, and when the name changed is not documented.
How many days before can you cancel a hotel reservation?
No major chain publishes one number, and two of them say so in as many words.
Marriott says the policy "is determined by the specific hotel and the rate type selected during booking", and that you must cancel "before the deadline specified in your Rate Details, which is always based on the Hotel's local time."
Hilton's help page says policies "may vary depending on rate type, dates of the reservation, and individual hotel policies". The 48 to 72 hours often cited describes common property practice rather than a chain rule.
| Chain | What the chain publishes on cancellation | Guarantee compares against | Claim window | Match plus |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Marriott | No universal number. Set by the specific hotel and rate type, in the hotel's local time. 48 to 72 hours is common practice | Third-party sites only. Later Marriott-channel rates excluded | Within 24h of booking, and 24h+ before standard check-in | 25% off the room (20% at Design Hotels) or 5,000 Bonvoy points |
| Hilton | No universal number. May vary by rate type, dates and hotel policy. 48 hours is common practice | Anything not on an official Hilton channel. OTA rates count, Hilton.com does not | Within 24h of booking, and you must already hold a direct booking (new Aug 20, 2026) | 25% off the room rate. Minimum 1% difference |
| Hyatt | About 48 hours standard. Globalist and Explorist to 24 hours where the window is 48 hours or shorter | Another site only | Within 24h of booking, not inside 24h of first check-in | 20% off or 5,000 World of Hyatt points |
| IHG | No universal number. Best Flexible Rate commonly 24 hours before check-in, property range 24 to 72 hours | Non-IHG websites only. Terms updated Aug 14, 2026 | Within 24h of booking, and 24h+ before standard check-in | 5X points, capped at 40,000, credited after checkout |
| Wyndham | Not published centrally. Varies by property | Another website only | Within 24h of booking, and 48h+ before check-in | 3,000 points. US, Canada and EMEA only |
| Choice | Not published centrally. Varies by property | Third-Party Websites only. Metasearch does not count | Within 24h of booking, and 48h+ before a 6pm day-one arrival | $50 reward card, or first night free outside the US and Canada |
How to cancel and rebook a hotel without losing the room
Travellers ask three things first: whether holding both bookings is allowed, whether the rate can change without cancelling, and whether this is unreasonable.
In order: no prohibition on holding both was found in Marriott's or Hilton's terms, a modify path is worth trying where a chain offers one, and Hilton's own FAQ points at the manoeuvre.
Hilton, in terms effective August 20, 2026: "If your travel plans change and your reservation is still eligible for cancellation, you may cancel the original reservation and make a new booking at then-current pricing."
Read the deadline, and its time zone
Open your rate details and find the cancellation deadline. Marriott states its deadlines run on the hotel's local time, which is what turns a comfortable margin into a missed one.Try modify before you cancel
Marriott's help centre states that because rates are dynamic, "any modification effectively re-quotes the stay at the most current price for the requested changes." Where your chain offers a modify path, it is worth trying first, because the reservation stays intact.Phone the hotel
On a direct booking, calling the property and asking for the current lower rate costs nothing and often works. It also leaves the reservation, and anything attached to it, intact. If you must cancel, book the new room first
Never release the room you have before the replacement is confirmed. Hotels.com is the only operator here that prescribes the order: "please make a new booking and pay the lower price... Cancel your existing booking and we'll refund you the full amount."
One published limit cuts against modifying. Member and promotional rates often cannot attach to a booking you already hold: Hilton's Advance Purchase terms say the rate is "not valid for existing reservations", Wyndham says the same of its member rate, and Hyatt's is "not valid in conjunction with previously booked or held stays".
Catching this by hand means pricing your exact room night after night, then acting before a deadline set in the hotel's local time. Autopilot takes that over: it tracks the rate from the moment you add the reservation to check-in and reprices the booking when the rate falls, for 25% of what it recovers and nothing otherwise, and adding a trip takes about ten seconds.
When not to cancel and rebook
Strongest warning first: moving a direct stay onto an online travel agency costs you the loyalty value of the stay.
Marriott's terms class a room booked through a third-party channel as a Non-Qualifying Rate, earning no points, no elite night credit and no tier benefits. Hilton excludes third-party bookings from the definition of a Stay "irrespective of rate paid", and withholds on-property benefits too.
Against a 5% saving that is often a net loss, and our comparison of hotel loyalty programs covers what those benefits are worth. Five more cases to leave the booking alone:
- Prepaid and advance-purchase rates. Hyatt's Advance Purchase requires full prepayment with no refunds or changes allowed, and whether other chains permit a fee-bearing date change is not established. Prepaid is not a loyalty dead end, though: Marriott's qualifying-rate list includes advance purchase.
- Group, wedding and event blocks. Marriott directs you to the group organizer for the block's policy, and both chains exclude group and event-block rates from their guarantees. A block rate is not a public rate, and stepping out of it is rarely reversible.
- Sold-out nights. Marriott's Terms of Use, last revised July 2026, describe a confirmed reservation as "the Property's acceptance of a request... not a guarantee by Marriott that accommodations will be provided".
- An approved price match. Hilton: "If you change your booking... the hotel may re-evaluate and cancel the approved price match." Marriott says approval "may be invalidated by any changes... made to the reservation".
- Marriott Nightly Upgrade Awards. The award attaches to one reservation, so a rebook detaches the confirmed upgrade, and Marriott's terms do not say what cancelling does to the award.
One genuine open question: whether resort fees, destination fees or taxes recalculate on a rebooking is not documented by anyone. The fee that applies is the one disclosed on the booking you hold (how resort fees work).
That makes this a vigilance problem rather than a policy problem: a 24-hour claim window that closes while you sleep, a rate that needs re-checking daily, and a deadline in the hotel's local time. The same mechanics run across flights and hotels in our repricing guide.
