Hotel Cancellation Policies by Chain (2026 Deadlines)
There is no single hotel cancellation policy by chain. There is the policy attached to the exact rate you booked, and that is the one that governs.
Most flexible rates at Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, IHG, Wyndham, and Choice let you cancel for free somewhere between 24 and 72 hours before check-in, as of August 2026.
Prepaid advance-purchase rates are the trap: you pay upfront and get nothing back. Here is the dated, neutral reference, chain by chain.
How do hotel cancellation deadlines actually work?
Every major chain sets the real deadline at the level of the rate and the property, not the brand. Two hotels under the same flag can hold different windows on the same night.
That deadline shows up twice: on the rate details at checkout, and again on your confirmation email. The confirmation line is the one that binds.
Rates split into two families. Flexible rates let you cancel free until a stated deadline, and advance-purchase rates are prepaid and non-refundable from the moment you book.
Free-cancellation deadlines by chain (2026)
The table below is the centerpiece: typical flexible-rate deadlines and the advance-purchase lockout for the six biggest chains, as of August 2026.
Treat every window as a starting point. The exact number can move by property, season, and rate, and holidays or special events often tighten it.
| Chain | Typical free-cancel deadline (flexible rate) | Late or no-show penalty | Advance purchase / non-refundable | Notes (as of Aug 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Marriott (Bonvoy) | 48 to 72 hours before check-in; some rates 24 hours | About one night's room plus tax | Member and Advance Purchase rates are prepaid and non-refundable | Varies by property and rate |
| Hilton (Honors) | 48 to 72 hours; Semi-Flex often 4 days (about 96 hours) | About one night's room plus tax | Advance Purchase is prepaid and generally non-refundable | Change fee where permitted: $25 select brands, $50 premium brands |
| Hyatt (World of Hyatt) | 24 to 48 hours; some properties 72 hours | About one night's room plus tax | Advance Purchase is 100% prepaid with no cancellations or changes | Globalist and Explorist elites may cancel up to 24 hours on eligible non-prepaid rates |
| IHG (One Rewards) | 24 hours on Best Flexible Rate; 72 hours on Book Now, Pay Later | Set by the property and rate | Non-refundable and advance-purchase rates give no refund | Deadlines vary by property |
| Wyndham (Rewards) | 24 to 72 hours, set by the property | Set by the property and rate | Non-refundable rates cannot be cancelled at all | Cancel per the rate's stated policy for your dates |
| Choice (Choice Privileges) | 48 hours for guests; 24 hours for Choice Privileges members | Set by the property and rate | Advance-purchase reservations cannot be modified or cancelled | Member policy effective July 14, 2021; deadline varies by property |

What is an advance purchase rate, and why can't you cancel it?
An advance-purchase rate is the discounted price you pay in full at booking. In exchange for the lower number, you give up the right to cancel or change.
Every big chain sells a version of it. Marriott and Hilton call it Advance Purchase, Hyatt calls it Advance Purchase, IHG runs a Book Early and Save family, and Choice labels its own advance-purchase reservations non-refundable.
- Prepaid. The full stay hits your card the day you book, not at check-in.
- Non-refundable. Cancel or no-show and you forfeit the whole amount, as the rate details state at checkout.
- Usually no changes. Hyatt's terms allow no changes at all; some chains permit a paid modification, which is the exception, not the rule.
So the advance-purchase discount is really a bet that your plans will not move. If they do, that lower rate is the most expensive line on the page.
Do member and promo rates change the deadline?
They can, in both directions. A loyalty membership sometimes buys you a shorter notice window, and sometimes the discounted member rate is the non-refundable one.
Choice is the clean example of the friendly version: registered Choice Privileges members need only 24 hours of notice, against 48 hours for other guests, per Choice's 2021 policy update.
Hyatt elites get the same kind of edge. Globalist and Explorist members can cancel up to 24 hours before check-in on eligible rates, though never on prepaid or non-refundable ones, per One Mile at a Time.
What happens if you cancel late or no-show?
Miss the deadline on a flexible rate and you are not charged for the whole stay. You are charged a penalty, and across Marriott, Hilton, and Hyatt that penalty is typically one night's room plus tax.
A no-show is treated the same way or worse, and some properties then release the rest of the reservation. On an advance-purchase rate there is no separate penalty, because you already paid the full amount and it is gone.
About 1 night
If the rate is refundable and you are still inside the window, cancelling to rebook a lower price costs you nothing. Our cancel-and-rebook guide walks the exact steps, and the timing guide covers when a rate is most likely to drop.
Where do you find your exact cancellation deadline?
Open your confirmation email and read the rate details block. It states the free-cancellation date and time in the property's own time zone, or the word non-refundable.
If that line is missing or unclear, the account page for the reservation shows the same terms, and the hotel's front desk can confirm them. When a chain does not document a specific deadline for your rate, treat the confirmation as final and ask before you rely on anything else.
Find the rate line
In the confirmation, locate "free cancellation until" a date and time, or "non-refundable."Note the time zone
Deadlines run on the property's local time, not yours. Set a reminder a day early to be safe.Confirm anything ambiguous
If the wording is unclear, ask the hotel directly rather than assuming the flexible window applies.
Hotels are one side of your trip. On the flight side, a directly booked cash fare can drop after you pay, and that gap is money you are owed back. Once you add your trip, Autopilot tracks the fare and reprices the reservation when it falls, and the savings come back as airline credit or a refund.
That flight repricing covers cash tickets booked directly with Alaska, American, Delta, JetBlue, or United, and not hotel bookings. For rooms, the free-cancellation window is the lever, and our hotel price-match guide and repricing guide cover the rest.
