Southwest Flight Credits: The Complete 2026 Guide

A Southwest flight credit is stored value from a ticket you canceled or downgraded, and as of August 2026 most of them expire. Basic fares return a credit good for six months. Choice, Choice Preferred and Choice Extra return a twelve month Transferable Flight Credit, counted from the day you booked.

Southwest's product name is flight credit. Your account still says Travel Funds: the public lookup is the Check Travel Funds page, the app section is My Travel Funds. Same money, two names.

The rules changed on May 28, 2025 and most pages have not caught up. Credits created on or before May 27, 2025 still never expire. Everything ticketed after that carries a date, and it is a travel-completed-by date rather than a book-by date.

Do Southwest flight credits expire? 2026 rules by fare

Yes, unless the credit predates the change. Southwest reinstated expiration dates for reservations booked, ticketed or voluntarily changed on or after May 28, 2025, and left earlier credits alone (One Mile at a Time covered the switch).

Southwest tickets the moment you book, so that day starts the clock. Cancel a Basic fare five months in and you hold one month of credit, not six. Guides sorting credits by Wanna Get Away Plus, Anytime or Business Select predate the current fare lineup.

The Southwest flight credit expiration matrix, by fare and by how you paid

The fare tier sets the default, and the original form of payment can override it. Southwest's own rows as of August 2026, for reservations booked or changed on or after May 28, 2025. TFC means Transferable Flight Credit.

Two rows deserve a second look. Gift card money on the top two tiers is the only post-2025 case producing a credit with no date. And the Basic gift card row calls the result a Transferable Flight Credit even though Basic credits never transfer, which reads like a page inconsistency.

Three overlays sit on the grid: disrupted-flight credits run five years, Getaways vacation travel credits run 18 months, and pre May 28, 2025 credits carry no date.

How do Southwest flight credits work?

Four events create one as of August 2026: canceling a flight, downgrading to a cheaper fare, canceling a purchased seat during a flight cancellation, and no-showing a refundable fare. Canceled partner airline itineraries do not produce one.

Cancel at least 10 minutes before departure

That 10 minute rule decides everything on a nonrefundable ticket. Cancel a Basic or Choice fare in time and the value returns as credit; miss the window and the fare, plus any points behind it, can be forfeited. Choice Preferred and Choice Extra refund your original payment instead.

A canceled seat purchase becomes its own credit

Assigned seating is live network-wide, and a purchased seat canceled during a flight cancellation generates its own credit under the same confirmation number. Two credits, entered separately at checkout. Our Southwest seat assignment guide covers seat pricing.

Points and Cash + Points bookings

Cancel an award booking and the points redeposit to the account that booked it, while unused taxes and fees follow the matrix row matching how you paid them. Cash + Points splits the same way (southwest.com).

The old credits that never expire, and the reuse trap

A credit from on or before May 27, 2025 has no expiration date, and that protection may not survive being spent. A credit created by paying with another credit adopts the earliest date of any credit used, capped on Choice at 12 months and Basic at 6.

So take a never-expiring credit, book a Basic fare with it, cancel, and the reissued credit comes back with a six month date. Choice Preferred and Choice Extra use adopt-only language with no cap, so a credit with no date has nothing to inherit there.

Southwest's two policy sentences use different anchors, one the credit's creation date and one the reservation's booking date, and travelers with tickets from either side of the boundary have reported dates they did not expect. Southwest Transferable Flight Credit: who gets one and how to hand it off

A Transferable Flight Credit is the only Southwest credit that moves to another person. As of August 2026 it comes from Choice, Choice Preferred and Choice Extra cancellations and downgrades, plus no-shows on the refundable tiers. Basic credits never transfer (southwest.com).

   It has to read Transferable Flight Credit in your account. A plain credit will not move.

   They pay any fare difference. Southwest lists no fee.

Two limits to plan around. Southwest Business bookings transfer only within one organization, and an untransferred credit flies the passenger it was issued to and nobody else. Families get caught by the second: moving several thousand dollars to one adult child locks the balance under that name.

How to check your Southwest travel funds and expiration dates

Two paths as of August 2026, and only one needs a login.

1. Logged in: My Account, then Payment on desktop or My Travel Funds in the app. Each credit is listed with its own date.
2. No account link: the Check Travel Funds page takes a name plus the confirmation number of the canceled reservation.

Read the list, not the total. A $900 balance made of a $600 credit expiring in March and a $300 credit expiring in September is two problems on two deadlines. Disrupted-flight credits can take 48 hours to show the right date.

How to use a Southwest flight credit at checkout

Search the flight, reach the payment screen, choose to apply a flight credit, and enter that credit's confirmation number. Anything left over stays in your travel funds on its original expiration date.

The three form of payment rule, and how to combine Southwest flight credits

Three forms of payment per passenger per reservation, and each credit counts as one. At most one credit card, at most two LUV Vouchers, and PayPal, Apple Pay and Flex Pay cannot combine with a card. Note the number: three, not two. Two is the JetBlue rule, per our JetBlue Travel Bank guide.

So four small credits cannot fund one ticket in a single booking. Pair two credits with one card per passenger, or split the trip into separate one way bookings and burn a different credit on each.

Can you apply a flight credit to a flight you already booked?

Not to the ticket as it stands. A credit is a form of payment, applied when a reservation is created or repriced, so the working method is to change or rebook and pay the new fare with it. Southwest publishes no sentence stating that outright.

Flight credit vs points vs LUV Voucher vs gift card

Six kinds of stored value, and the differences that cost people money are whether the thing expires and whether it covers taxes and fees.

The Southwest LUV Voucher is the most restricted of the six

A LUV Voucher is goodwill compensation rather than your own money coming back. It pays for airfare only: not government taxes and fees, not bags, not seats. Travel must be completed by the voucher's printed date.

What Southwest flight credits can and cannot buy

• Yes: the fare and its taxes and fees. The taxes-and-fees restriction people repeat belongs to LUV Vouchers and points, not to credits.
• No: Getaways by Southwest packages, and a vacation travel credit does not pay for flights.
• Not documented: whether a credit can settle a standalone seat or bag fee outside a fare purchase. Southwest publishes nothing either way.

Keeping a Southwest flight credit alive: what actually works

In December 2025, WRAL reported alongside Consumer Reports on a traveler who lost a credit worth more than $900 after illness forced a cancellation. It came from a Basic fare, and the six month window had run since the day the ticket was purchased.

There is no extension. Southwest publishes no reinstatement process, no medical exception and no goodwill window. What is left is spending strategy.

• Book the tier that refunds. Choice Preferred and Choice Extra return money to your original form of payment when you cancel 10 or more minutes out.
• Transfer it, if it is transferable. A credit sitting unused is worth more with someone who will actually fly.
• Spend it on travel you are genuinely taking, and check that the last flight lands before the deadline.
• Watch what you pay with. An old credit hands the new one its date, or a shorter one.

No. Southwest's published matrix says a booking paid for with a credit adopts that credit's existing expiration date, so paying with an expiring credit does not extend it. Plan around the date you already have.

Southwest is also the airline where a fare drop after booking pays out in exactly this currency.
