Hyatt Cancellation Policy: Deadlines, Fees and Awards
There is no single Hyatt cancellation policy. There is the policy attached to the exact rate you booked, and that is the one that governs your reservation.
Hyatt's default asks for at least 48 hours of notice to avoid a cancellation fee, and every hotel is free to set its own policy on top of that. Real windows run from 24 hours to 72.
Advance Purchase is the rate that locks: paid in full at booking, with no cancellation and no change. Here is how each piece works, and where to read your own deadline.
How does the Hyatt cancellation policy work?
Hyatt sets the real deadline at the level of the rate and the property, not the brand. Two hotels flying the same flag can hold different windows on the same night.
Hyatt documents that directly. Its default cancellation policy states that each hotel may continue to set its own cancellation policy based on local market dynamics, and encourages guests to check that policy at the time of booking.
Rates then split into two families. Flexible rates let you cancel free until a stated date and time, and Advance Purchase rates are prepaid and non-refundable from the moment you book.
What is Hyatt's standard free-cancellation window?
Hyatt's default policy asks guests to cancel at least 48 hours in advance to avoid a cancellation fee, per its own policy announcement, issued December 2017 and effective for reservations made or changed on or after January 1, 2018.
That is the most recent brand-level statement of the default we could verify as of Sep 2026. Treat 48 hours as the figure Hyatt points to, not a number every property is bound by.
Reported windows across the portfolio run from 24 hours to 72, with resorts, peak dates and special events sitting at the longer end.
| Hyatt rate type | Typical cancellation deadline | What comes back | Notes (as of Sep 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Member rate | Property-set, commonly 24 to 48 hours before arrival | Full refund inside the window | The common flexible rate for World of Hyatt members |
| Standard rate | Property-set, commonly 48 hours and up to 72 at some resorts | Full refund inside the window | Peak dates and special events often carry a longer window |
| Advance Purchase | No cancellation permitted | Nothing | Prepaid in full at booking, and changes are not permitted |
| Award night (points) | The property's own cancellation policy applies | Points returned to your account | Hyatt's terms state points return within approximately three days |
| Points + Cash | The property's own cancellation policy applies | Confirm at booking | Hyatt does not publish a separate rule we could verify for the cash portion |

Can you cancel a Hyatt Advance Purchase rate?
No. The Advance Purchase rate is charged in full when you book, and its terms allow neither a cancellation nor a change.
That is the trade the discount is built on. You accept a lower nightly number in exchange for giving up every exit.
- Prepaid. The full stay is charged the day you book, not at check-in.
- Non-refundable. Cancel or no-show and the amount is forfeited, as the rate details state at checkout.
- No changes. The rate terms do not permit a modification, so dates are fixed once booked.
What does a late cancellation or no-show cost at Hyatt?
Miss the deadline on a flexible rate and you are not charged for the whole stay. Hyatt properties typically document a charge of one night's room plus tax.
About 1 night
That figure is documented per hotel rather than as one brand-wide rule, so the property's own policy page is the one that answers it for your stay.
On an Advance Purchase rate there is no separate late-cancellation penalty, because the full amount was already charged and is not refunded.
How do Hyatt award night cancellations and point redeposits work?
An award night is not governed by a special points deadline. It follows the individual property's own cancellation policy, the same as a cash rate.
Cancel inside that window and the points come back. Hyatt's terms state that points deducted for an award reservation are returned to the member's account within approximately three days of the cancellation.
About 3 days
Those terms are quoted in AwardWallet's guide to hotel free-night cancellation policies, published Aug 2026. Cancel outside the property's window and the hotel charges its cancellation fee to the card on file.
Hyatt does not publish a points redeposit fee that we could verify as of Sep 2026. On the evidence available, the cost of a late award cancellation is the property's own charge rather than a program fee.
A Hyatt award price therefore moves when a night shifts level, rather than drifting with daily demand the way a dynamically priced award does.
If you are cancelling an award night in order to rebook it cheaper, that is a different question from cancelling outright, and our award night price drops guide covers when a points price actually moves.
One honest gap: Hyatt does not publish a cancellation rule for the cash portion of a Points + Cash booking that we could verify as of Sep 2026. Read the rate details at booking rather than assuming it mirrors the points side.
Do Globalist and Explorist members get a different deadline?
They can, and the benefit starts a tier lower than many readers assume. Hyatt states that Explorist, Globalist and Lifetime Globalist members may cancel up to 24 hours before arrival when the hotel's cancellation policy is 48 hours.
The condition at the end of that sentence is the part to hold onto. It is a benefit scoped to 48-hour properties, not a universal 24-hour window.
- Prepaid and non-refundable rates. The elite window does not reach them, whatever your tier.
- Properties with a longer policy. Where a hotel's cancellation policy exceeds 48 hours, the benefit does not apply.
- Named exclusions. Hyatt Residence Club resorts, Miraval resorts and M life destinations sit outside it.
Those terms come from the same 2018 announcement, and some brand names in that exclusion list have since changed, so confirm the current scope. Our hotel loyalty programs comparison covers how the tiers differ more broadly.
Where do you find your exact Hyatt cancellation deadline?
Open your confirmation email and read the rate details block. It carries either a free-cancellation date and time in the property's time zone, or the word non-refundable.
The same terms appear on the reservation in your World of Hyatt account, and the property can confirm them directly.
Find the rate line
In the confirmation, locate the free-cancellation date and time, or the words non-refundable. Note the rate name beside it, since the policy attaches to the rate.Check the time zone
Deadlines run on the property's local time, not yours. Set a reminder a day early so a time difference never decides this for you.Confirm anything ambiguous
If the wording is unclear, or the booking is one Hyatt does not document in detail, ask the hotel rather than assuming the default window applies.
Some bookings sit outside all of this. Group and convention reservations run on their own contract terms, and stays at partner brands are handled through those brands, so confirm those directly rather than assuming the standard policy carries over.
Knowing the deadline is what makes a cash rate worth re-checking, because inside the window a cancellation and rebooking costs nothing. Once you add a directly booked hotel stay, Autopilot tracks the rate through to check-in and claims the difference when it drops.
Award nights stay a manual check, because Autopilot does not cover points bookings. On a cash Hyatt stay, our cancel-and-rebook guide walks the sequence, and the cancellation deadline decides whether it is available to you at all.
Policies move, and Hyatt has already restructured its award chart once this year. Read the rate line on every booking, note the date it was accurate, and let the confirmation email be the record you trust.
