When to Book Thanksgiving Flights 2026: The Real Windows

The best time to book Thanksgiving flights in 2026 runs from late September through October 31. That is where the major datasets converge. Google's analysis of 2021 to 2025 airfares puts domestic Thanksgiving prices lowest around 35 days before departure. Hopper's 2025 advice was to book before Halloween.

Then it gets complicated. Ask five experts when to book Thanksgiving flights 2026 and you get a three-month spread. Going says buy by August. The Points Guy says no later than Labor Day weekend. Adobe once put the low point in the first week of November.

They can all be right, because booking windows are probability bands, not fences. This guide reconciles them, converts the day counts into real 2026 dates, and covers what happens to your fare after you buy.

When to book Thanksgiving flights 2026: what each source says

The two heaviest datasets are Google's 2025 holiday analysis and Hopper's 2024 Holiday Travel Outlook. Both point the same way: mid-October through Halloween is the last stretch where averages work for you.

What Google's window looks like on the 2026 calendar

Google publishes days before departure, not dates, so here is the arithmetic. Thanksgiving 2026 is Thursday, November 26. For a Wednesday, November 25 departure, 59 days out is September 27, 35 days is October 21, 24 days is November 1. A Saturday, November 21 departure shifts that to September 23, October 17 and October 28. So the low zone runs late September to about November 1, bottoming near October 17 to 21, 2026. That is our calculation from Google's day ranges, not a Google forecast.

Why do the experts disagree about the best time to book Thanksgiving flights?

Because they are answering different questions. Google reads fares across thousands of markets, Hopper its own fare feed, Expedia and ARC the tickets booked on one platform. Adobe's number came from pre-pandemic web-visit data.

The most telling evidence is that Google's own answer moved. Its 2023-era report put the Thanksgiving low at 36 to 74 days out, bottoming near 52 days. The September 2025 report says 24 to 59 days, bottoming near 35.

So read a booking window as a probability band. Buying inside it improves your odds across thousands of trips. It does not promise the bottom on your route. Ordinary travel sits in later bands, which is why our guide to how far in advance to book flights gives different numbers.

Does the day of the week you book matter?

Barely. Google found the booking day worth about 1.3% at most, and Kayak's March 2026 guidance says no single day is reliably cheapest. Expedia's February 2026 fare report named Friday cheapest for both booking and departing. The day you fly matters more: Expedia put Tuesday departures about 14% below Sunday.

What are the cheapest days to fly for Thanksgiving 2026?

Thanksgiving 2026 falls on Thursday, November 26, and the travel week runs Tuesday November 24 through Monday November 30. The spread inside that week beats anything your booking date can win you.

Even here the sources split. Expedia's 2025 platform data named the Sunday after Thanksgiving its cheapest return, the opposite of what Hopper and Going found, because Expedia reads tickets booked on its own site. That Sunday in 2025 was the busiest day in TSA history, at 3,133,924 people screened. Treat day-level advice as tendency, then price your dates both ways.

International runs on a different clock, and every source agrees. Google's data has international fares lowest 49 or more days out, Going puts peak-season international at 4 to 10 months, and Hopper found in 2024 that flying during Thanksgiving week rather than the weekend before saved about 20% per ticket, roughly $183.

Why booking Thanksgiving flights in 2026 is not like 2025

Airline fares in July 2026 ran 25.5% higher than a year earlier, per the BLS release of August 12, 2026, against 3.4% all-items inflation. The turn was abrupt: fares sat 5.4% below year-ago levels in November 2025 and have run above 20% every month since April.

Seat supply is part of it. Spirit Airlines ceased operations on May 2, 2026, after Chapter 11 filings in November 2024 and August 2025, which makes this the first Thanksgiving without it. The Department of Justice had found fares up to about 17% lower on routes Spirit served.

Capacity is tightening too. Bank of America cut its estimate of domestic capacity growth for the third quarter of 2026 to 0.8%, concentrated in September, and United trimmed about 5% of planned domestic summer capacity. November schedules stay fluid until airlines firm them up between August and October.

The holiday-specific number comes from Points Path, published by The Points Guy on August 5, 2026: domestic Thanksgiving round trips are tracking about 13% above 2025, Christmas about 18%, international about 19%. Katy Nastro of Going warned there that waiting for already elevated prices to fall is the worst move this year.

None of this moves the statistical window. It raises the cost of missing it.

Booking in August, September, October or November: the verdict

Booking in August 2026

Book now if your dates and route are fixed, if you have to fly the peak days, or if you are going international. You are ahead of the mid-September jump Points Path documented last year, in a market about 13% above 2025. Statistically you are slightly early, so flexible domestic travelers lose little by waiting a few weeks. Booking today buys certainty, not the bottom.

Booking in September 2026

The consensus window opens. Google's 59-day edge falls around September 23 to 27 for late-November departures, Expedia's 2025 deadline was September 27, and The Points Guy says Labor Day weekend, September 5 to 7 in 2026. Book by month end if your itinerary touches the peak days.

Booking in October 2026

The last month where average data is on your side. Google's statistical bottom lands around October 17 to 21 by our calculation, Hopper's 2024 deadline was October 14, and its 2025 advice was to book before Halloween. Seat selection thins out too. Book by October 31.

Booking in November 2026

Every current source says averages rise from here, quickly. Fare classes expire at the 21-day, 14-day and 7-day advance-purchase marks, which Going says can move a route $100 to $200 overnight, and Hopper measured increases of 5% to 10% a day, up to about $30, across the final two weeks in 2024. The levers left are flexibility: fly Thanksgiving Day or Tuesday November 24, return Monday November 30, take a connection (about 22% cheaper in Google's 2025 data), price nearby airports. Late drops are exceptions to catch, not a plan.

Already booked? Your fare isn't finished moving

Start with the direction. Thanksgiving fares do not usually fall late. Hopper's 2024 data showed daily increases of 5% to 10% through the final two weeks, and Going's 2026 guidance is that prices soar around three weeks out. Averages rise once the window closes.

Individual itineraries are a different matter. They reprice constantly, in both directions. Adobe measured Thanksgiving fares falling about 10% into the first week of November in 2018 and 2019, so some years do soften late. A drop after you book is something to catch, not something to count on.

   Southwest returns the difference on its upper tiers as credit or refund, while its Basic fare cannot be changed, and tier names have been in flux, so confirm first. See Southwest repricing.

Google has also run a price guarantee on select Google Flights itineraries, refunding the difference when a booked fare falls, though it has paused and relaunched since 2019 and excludes basic economy.
