How to Upgrade a United Flight to First Class (2026)

There are four ways into a United first class or Polaris seat, and only two of them involve paying. Which ones are open to you depends on your status, your fare, and what United has released for upgrades.

United does not run a bid auction, so nobody names their own number and hopes. You earn the upgrade, buy it at United's posted price, or spend PlusPoints or miles on it.

Here is each route, what it costs, and whether it confirms on the spot, as of September 2026.

What are the four ways to upgrade a United flight?

Every route to the front cabin on United falls into one of four buckets. Keeping them separate is what makes the cost question answerable.

Two are earned and two are bought. Only the bought ones are open to a traveler with no status and no points balance.

Can you upgrade to first class on United for free?

Yes, in one specific sense. Upgraded Points describes complimentary Premier upgrades as available to MileagePlus Premier members traveling on a United-operated flight.

That seat is free because you already paid for it in flying, not because there is a way to conjure one.

You cannot buy a place in this queue. United clears it by status first, then fare class, then when you asked, in the order NerdWallet published in August 2026.

Basic Economy sits outside all of it. It is excluded from complimentary upgrades and from PlusPoints, so the fare you book decides whether you are even in the running.

How do United's paid upgrade offers work?

This is the route open to everyone. United sells a move into a premium cabin on a ticket you already hold.

Upgraded Points describes it as choosing an available premium cabin seat on united.com, in the United app, at a kiosk, or with a gate agent, and paying with money or miles.

The word doing the work there is available. Buying a seat shown as available confirms the cabin on the spot, with no list to wait on.

The price is not a fixed number. It moves with how full the cabin is and how close departure is, which is why the figure you see today is rarely the figure you see next week.

This moving price is the door Autopilot works. On a United ticket booked directly, add your trip and Autopilot claims the seat when United's upgrade price falls under a ceiling you set, for the airline's upgrade price plus a 25% success fee, never above that ceiling.

Can you bid on a United upgrade?

No. United does not run a bid-for-upgrade auction, so there is no screen where you name your own number.

The Points Guy lists United among carriers that "do not offer the ability to set your own amount to bid for a chance at an upgrade, but may allow fixed-price upgrades using cash and/or miles."

Bidding is largely an international story, and many of those programs run on the same platform. Plusgrade says over 250 companies worldwide use its offerings.

• Carriers widely documented with bid programs include Air Canada, Lufthansa, Etihad Airways, Singapore Airlines, Air New Zealand and Virgin Atlantic.
• The only domestic exception named by The Points Guy is Hawaiian Airlines, as of its February 2025 guide.
• United sells fixed-price upgrades rather than running an auction, which is why the posted upgrade offer is the cash route on a United ticket.

Autopilot works the paid door either way: the airline's own upgrade offer price, or a bid where a carrier runs one. United does not run one, so on a United ticket the posted upgrade price is the only paid route, and that is the one it works.

How do United PlusPoints work?

PlusPoints are United's upgrade currency for its top tiers. NerdWallet reports Premier Platinum members receiving 40 a year and Premier 1K members an additional 280.

You spend them on a specific flight, and the number depends on cabin and fare rather than on a cash price.

AwardWallet and The Miles Market publish the current chart. Confirm the number for your own flight on united.com before you plan around it.

• 20 PlusPoints from economy into domestic first on a short-haul flight, or into United Premium Plus.
• 30 PlusPoints from Premium Plus into long-haul business.
• 40 PlusPoints from a standard economy fare into long-haul Polaris business.
• 80 PlusPoints from a discounted economy fare into long-haul Polaris business.
• 40 PlusPoints per segment on partner airlines including ANA, Lufthansa and Copa.

Your fare bucket is the biggest lever on that list. The same Polaris seat costs twice as much from a discounted economy fare as from a standard one.

Why a PlusPoints upgrade does not clear

PlusPoints do not buy a seat out of the cabin. They buy a seat United has released into upgrade inventory, which is a separate thing.

AwardWallet describes that inventory as fare class PZ for Polaris and RN for Premium Plus. When none is open, the request goes on a waitlist instead.

AwardWallet adds that travelers booked in Premium Plus clear ahead of those booked in economy on the same waitlist.

PlusPoints are valid until January 31 of the year after they were earned, per The Miles Market, so points earned in 2026 expire on January 31, 2028.

The chart has an expiry date

United announced the change in December 2025. The Points Guy reported United framing it as market pricing rather than a devaluation, with some upgrades costing less, many priced around the same, and some higher.

As of September 2026 the fixed chart still applies. Treat the numbers above as current rather than permanent, and re-check them against your own flight before February 2027.

What about upgrading with miles?

Separate from PlusPoints, United sells MileagePlus Upgrade Awards: miles plus a possible cash co-pay.

Upgraded Points gives an example of 22,500 miles plus a $125 co-pay each way from economy to business, and notes the co-pay applies to members without Premier status.

Star Alliance partner upgrades can be requested up to 331 days before departure, for as many as four travelers on one reservation.

Which upgrade route fits your ticket?

Run the four in order of what they cost you. The answer usually sorts itself out in about a minute.

   Start with status

   If you hold Premier status and the flight is United-operated, the complimentary upgrade request costs nothing and runs in the background. Make it first, then treat everything else as a second path.

   Check upgrade inventory before you count on points

   If PZ or RN space is open, PlusPoints or a MileagePlus Upgrade Award confirms the seat. If it is not, you are on a waitlist, and a paid offer is the only route that settles today.

   Price the paid offer against the cabin itself

   Compare United's upgrade price with what a premium cabin ticket costs on its own. Sometimes the offer wins, sometimes the fare does, and it takes one search to know which.

   Look again as departure gets closer

   The upgrade price moves with demand, and so does the fare on the ticket you already hold. Neither number is settled the day you book.

That last step is the one most travelers skip. A ticket keeps moving in price after you buy it, and so does the seat in front of it.
