How the Delta Upgrade List Works (2026 Guide)

The Delta upgrade list is ordered by eight factors Delta publishes openly, starting with Medallion tier. Everything below tier only matters once two travelers arrive at it on equal footing.

The list does not run on one clock either. Delta opens a different window for each cabin, from Delta Comfort clearing shortly after ticketing for Diamond and Platinum to domestic Delta One clearing on the day of departure.

And since July 8, 2026, Delta sells a Basic version of nearly every cabin it flies. Those fares sit outside the upgrade system entirely, business class included.

How does the Delta upgrade list work?

Delta calls the ordering system the Complimentary Upgrade clearance priority, and publishes the full hierarchy on its Medallion upgrades page. Eight factors, fixed order, as of September 2026.

Read it strictly from the top down. Two travelers only reach factor 3 if factors 1 and 2 are already identical.

Delta does not publish a booking-class ladder for complimentary upgrades. The Y, B and M style letters that circulate on this subject sit in the Upgrade Certificate terms, where they govern certificates only.

When do Delta upgrades clear?

Delta publishes a separate clearing window for each cabin, and states them in hours. That matters, because readers arriving from other airlines often carry the wrong numbers.

Every window is subject to upgrade availability. As of September 2026 there is no complimentary upgrade into an international Delta One seat at any tier, so that cabin comes through a certificate, miles or cash.

• Non-Medallion Delta SkyMiles Reserve card members may clear beginning 24 hours out, after all Medallion members, and Delta SkyMiles Platinum card members clear after them.
• Partner airline elite members are eligible for day-of-departure upgrades only, with Aeromexico Rewards members the stated exception.
• If you have requested upgrades for more than one cabin, Delta upgrades you to the most premium option available.
• Clearing into Delta Comfort does not end your standby for the most premium cabin eligible on that flight.

What breaks a tie in Delta upgrade priority?

Picture two Platinum members on the same flight, both ticketed in Delta Main, both on a Classic fare. Delta upgrade priority keeps going well past the tier.

1. Million Miler status. Holders clear before members who do not hold it.
2. Travel Experience tier. Extra outranks Classic and Refundable on a tiebreak.
3. Delta SkyMiles Reserve or Reserve Business card. Higher priority within your Medallion group.
4. Delta Corporate Traveler status. A Medallion member ticketed with an employer's Corporate Ticket Designator.
5. MQDs earned this calendar year. A larger balance ranks higher, in groups of 100 MQDs.
6. Date and time of the upgrade request. Delta scopes this one to tiebreaks at the gate.

That granularity is the honest answer to why someone at your tier cleared and you did not. Two Platinum members can be separated by a single 100-MQD bucket of spending this calendar year.

Factor 8 is narrower than it looks. Delta scopes date and time of request to tiebreaks at the gate, so it is not a general rule that requesting earlier ranks you higher.

MQDs are also the number that drives status itself. Delta's 2027 thresholds hold flat at $5,000 Silver, $10,000 Gold, $15,000 Platinum and $28,000 Diamond, earned on 2026 calendar-year activity.

Which Delta fares can be upgraded?

Basic fares are not eligible for paid or complimentary upgrades at any status. In 2026 that sentence covers far more ground than Basic Economy alone.

Delta Comfort Basic came first, on sale from November 2025. Delta First Basic, Delta Premium Select Basic and Basic Business followed on July 8, 2026.

Complimentary upgrades run into Delta Comfort, Delta First, and domestic Delta Premium Select and Delta One within the U.S. 50, including Hawaii, and no further. How to get on the Delta upgrade list

There is no separate sign-up sheet. Delta adds an eligible request to the upgrade list, then moves it to the airport standby list at check-in if it has not cleared.

   Put your SkyMiles number on the reservation

   Your status only counts if the booking carries your number. A missing SkyMiles number is the simplest reason a name never appears.

   Set your upgrade preferences, and know the default

   If you have never set them, Delta defaults you to opted in for Delta First, domestic Delta Premium Select and domestic Delta One, and opted out of automatic Delta Comfort upgrades. Delta describes the tradeoff: opting in keeps top priority within your window, opting out trades priority for choosing your own seat.

   Confirm the fare is not a Basic experience

   Basic sits outside the system in every cabin. Nothing else here changes that.

   Request a companion upgrade at least three hours out

   Delta requires both passengers to be ticketed and both upgrades requested at least three hours before scheduled departure.

   Watch your position from check-in onward

   Your spot appears in My Trips, in the Fly Delta app upon check-in, and on the gate information display screens.

How the Delta upgrade standby list works at the gate

The two names are not interchangeable. Before check-in you are on the upgrade list, and from check-in a pending request is added automatically to the airport standby list for a possible upgrade at the gate.

Read your position against the seats rather than on its own. Fourth on the list means one thing when four seats are open and something else entirely when none are.

Delta states that if you have already boarded and are the next Medallion member on the list when a seat opens, its crew will try to move you before takeoff. United orders its list differently, which we cover in our guide to the United upgrade list.

How do Delta upgrade certificates work?

Delta upgrade certificates are a Choice Benefit for Diamond and Platinum Medallion members, and Delta gives them higher priority than complimentary upgrades. Platinum members select 1 benefit, Diamond members 3.

The quantities are identical in the 2026 and 2027 columns Delta publishes on its Choice Benefits page. Diamond members may select Upgrade Certificates only once across those two years.

Delta Global Upgrade Certificate versus Delta Regional Upgrade Certificate

A Global Upgrade Certificate is Diamond-only and works on international and domestic Delta flights plus select KLM, Air France, Virgin Atlantic, Korean Air, Aeromexico and LATAM flights. A Regional Upgrade Certificate goes to Diamond and Platinum members and covers the same routes as complimentary upgrades.

The practical difference shows up on domestic Delta First. A Global certificate has access to every domestic Delta First and Delta Premium Select seat not yet sold, so it clears on request, while a Regional certificate waits for upgrade inventory to be released.

• Certificates clear off the waitlist by Medallion tier, then by when the request joined it, and they clear ahead of complimentary upgrade requests at the airport.
• One certificate can sit on several waitlists, but it clears on the first seat that opens across them and is then considered used.
• Waitlisted with companions, you clear only if there is availability for the whole party.
• If no seat opens before departure, the certificate returns to your account for a later flight.
• Each certificate buys a one-cabin upgrade above the cabin you purchased, one per passenger per one-way ticket.
• Clear into Delta Premium Select and you join the Delta One waitlist automatically, eligible from 24 hours out.

Upgrading with money or miles

Delta sells post-purchase upgrades through My Trips and the Fly Delta app, documented on its seats support page. As of September 2026 you can buy one any time after ticketing until 90 minutes before departure, or until the check-in window closes.

• Only itineraries wholly operated by Delta or Delta Connection are eligible.
• Upgrades are sold flight by flight, and everyone on the reservation must upgrade for the flight selected.
• Delta Basic experience customers may not purchase an upgrade.
• Paid upgrade seats are typically non-changeable and non-refundable depending on the original ticket's fare rules, and cannot move to a new itinerary.
• Cancel before the 24-hour check-in window opens and you may receive an eCredit for the value of the paid upgrade.
• Offers appear as a banner at the top of your trip in My Trips, and how airlines price them is its own subject, covered in upgrade offers and what they cost.

Delta upgrade with miles

Delta runs two mileage paths under two names. Upgrade with Miles is self-service and appears in your trip summary or seat options, while Mileage Upgrade Awards go through Delta Reservations and reach Virgin Atlantic, Air France, KLM and Aeromexico flights.

The paid and complimentary systems then meet. A paid upgrade moves you up factor 2, cabin purchased, on the flight you bought it for.

Seat upgrade purchases also earn MQDs when your SkyMiles number is on the reservation. That feeds factor 7 on every Delta flight you take for the rest of the calendar year.

One part of all this keeps moving after you book, and it is what you paid. Autopilot tracks the fare on your reservation, reprices it when the price drops, and recovers the difference.

That works on the fare, not on your place in the upgrade list, which Delta orders by the eight factors above. Add your Delta trip and Autopilot goes to work on the price from there.

Upgrades when you are traveling together

Delta documents companion upgrades in unusual detail, and the rules invert with the size of the party. In every case both passengers must be ticketed and upgrades requested at least three hours before departure.

Delta names one more consequence. A companion who changes their itinerary and is no longer traveling with the higher-tiered member loses that higher clearance window, and irregular operations can cancel a confirmed upgrade.

Delta has already published most of the 2027 picture. Certificate quantities are unchanged, the 2027 MQD thresholds hold flat, and the eight-factor hierarchy is the same system you can read today.

The one dated change ahead is Basic Business losing Delta One Lounge, Delta One check-in and Sky Club access for travel on or after January 19, 2027. Read your fare's experience name alongside its cabin name and you will know where you stand before you reach the gate.
