American Airlines Trip Credit vs Flight Credit (2026)
American Airlines issues two kinds of travel credit, and the difference decides who can use it and when it expires. An American Airlines Trip Credit is not the same thing as a Flight Credit.
Cancel a nonrefundable ticket on aa.com or the American app with your AAdvantage number in the reservation, and you generally get a Trip Credit. A Flight Credit is what American issues for an unused ticket, or when the cancellation runs through another channel.
Trip Credit runs on its own issue-date clock, and the holder can book travel for anyone. Flight Credit is tied to the named traveler and counts down from the day you first bought the ticket.
Trip Credit vs Flight Credit: the one-table answer
Here is the whole distinction in one view, drawn from American's own travel credit page. The rest of this guide unpacks each row.

Which credit will you actually get?
The trigger, not just the fact that you canceled, decides which credit lands in your account.
Cancel a nonrefundable ticket on aa.com or in the American app, with your AAdvantage number in the reservation, and American routes AAdvantage members to a Trip Credit. This is the current policy for credits issued on or after April 2, 2024.
You get a Flight Credit for an unused ticket, or when the cancellation happens through another channel or without an AAdvantage number attached. That credit stays locked to the named traveler and to the original ticket's clock.
How a price-drop credit is earned in the first place is a separate question. The guide to American repricing covers that flow, while this article covers the two credit types and their rules.
American Airlines Trip Credit, explained
An American Airlines Trip Credit is the more flexible of the two. American issues it for canceled tickets, significant delays, compensation, refunds, exchange residual, and eligible online bag and upgrade charges.
The window depends on your AAdvantage status. For credits issued on or after April 2, 2024, members get 12 months and non-members get 6, counted from the date printed on the credit.
The flexibility people value is who can spend it. The holder can book travel for anyone, including a friend or family member.
You can stack up to 8 Trip Credits in a single aa.com transaction, covering up to 9 passengers. It pays base fare plus taxes and fees, and eligible online bags, though not extras like seats.
12 or 6 months
American Airlines Flight Credit, explained
A Flight Credit is the value of an unused ticket, and it comes with tighter rules.
It is tied to the passenger named on it. Only that traveler can use it, and it cannot be pointed at anyone else.
The clock is the part that surprises people. Travel must begin within one year of the original ticket's issue date, the day you first bought the flight, not the day you canceled.
On aa.com you can apply one Flight Credit per booking, and up to two by calling Reservations. It pays for flights only: base fare plus taxes and fees, not seats or bags.
American Airlines credit expiration: the two clocks
American Airlines credit expiration trips up travelers because the two credits count down from different dates.
A Trip Credit counts from its issue date. Members get 12 months, non-members 6, and the deadline is printed on the credit.
A Flight Credit counts from the original ticket's issue date. A ticket you bought in March gives a Flight Credit already several months into its year by the time you cancel in July.
There is one longer runway. If the credit exists because of a qualifying delay or cancellation on an eligible American flight, DOT rules make it good for five years from that event.
American does not extend or reissue either credit once it expires. Redeem before the date on the credit, because there is no documented way to add time to it.
Can you use an American credit for someone else?
Yes for a Trip Credit, no for a Flight Credit, with one precise distinction underneath.
The holder of a Trip Credit can book travel for anyone, so you can buy a ticket for a friend or family member with it. A Flight Credit can only be used by the passenger named on it.
Neither credit is transferable as an instrument. The flexibility is in who a Trip Credit can pay for, not in handing the credit itself to someone else.
- Trip Credit: the holder can pay for anyone's ticket.
- Flight Credit: only the named passenger can use it.
- Both: non-transferable as instruments, and void if sold or bartered.
How to find your Trip Credit or Flight Credit
The fastest path for AAdvantage members is your account.
Log in and open Travel credit
At aa.com, sign in and open Travel credit. Every available Trip Credit and Flight Credit shows with its amount, ticket number, and expiration date.Find a Trip Credit without an account
Search your inbox for the American email titled Your Trip Credit. The Trip Credit number is 13 digits and starts with 001.Find a Flight Credit without an account
On aa.com, use Manage trips or Check-in, then View travel credits, and enter your 6-character confirmation code or 13-digit ticket number.
How to redeem an American Airlines credit
Redemption works the same way for both credits: you apply them when you pay for a new American flight.
Book your flight normally
Search and select your American flight the way you always would.Apply the credit at checkout
On the Review and pay page, choose Apply available credits or Add travel credit, then enter the number if prompted.Pay any remaining balance
Cover any difference with a credit card American accepts. You cannot mix the value of an existing ticket into a new one.
You can combine up to 8 Trip Credits in one aa.com booking, but only 1 Flight Credit online.
Flight Credit carries a geographic limit online: on aa.com it applies only to flights within the U.S., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, in U.S. currency. If a new ticket costs less than a Trip Credit, American issues a new Trip Credit for the difference.
When a nonrefundable American fare drops after you book, the savings come back as one of these credits, and Autopilot tracks the fare and works to claim the drop for you.
Basic Economy and American credits
Basic Economy changes the picture, because these fares cannot be changed outside a narrow Europe-origin exception. With no change path, the only option is to cancel for credit.
Within 24 hours of purchase, if you booked at least 7 days out, you can cancel a Basic Economy ticket for a refund to your original payment. The 24-hour cancellation rule covers that window in full.
After 24 hours, an AAdvantage member may be able to cancel a domestic Basic Economy ticket and receive travel credit minus a fee. It applies only under specific conditions:
- Your AAdvantage number is in the reservation before you cancel.
- The ticket was booked in the U.S. directly through American.
- The flight is American-marketed or operated and starts in the 50 U.S. states.
- You cancel on aa.com or the app before the first flight departs.
If the fee is more than the ticket price, American does not issue any credit. Third-party guides report the domestic fee at $99, while aa.com states only that it charges a fee.
For how Basic Economy compares with Main Cabin more broadly, see Main Cabin vs Basic Economy.
How American compares to United and Delta
American is not the only airline running a split credit system, and the shapes rhyme.
United's Future Flight Credit behaves much like American's Flight Credit, staying with the named traveler and tied to the original ticket. See United flight credits and Delta eCredit for each airline's own version.
Credits are only worth what you redeem, and the date on yours is what to write down. Know which credit you hold, start from the right date, and spend it before American's window closes.
